one day we blame romney, and we've seen a lot of blame for romney throughout the campaign. one day blaming the polling and liberal media. i think that's a stretch. when do we look at the ideology and the difficult sell that is for the american people. when you have a party where the conventional wisdom is that this is a party that is here for the rich to serve the rich and the corporations, that's a very difficult sell. i don't know that chris christie, regular guy, could sell that better. i don't know if rick santorum can sell that better than what we've seen already. >> well, obviously, there's 39, 38 days to go. where are we sf? 39. >> 30 states already votes, though. that's the other interesting thing in this. we have more than half the country is on you there casting ballots. we haven't had a debate yet. the 2013 presidential debate commission. let's schedule one before a ballot has been cast. >> that's interesting. i don't know that the candidates want to do that, right? the risk of what can happen in the debates gets very frightening for them. i don't know if they wa

mitt romney's had a lot of debates. he went through a long primary practice where he got beat up a lot and got to beat up other people. barack obama had no primary process and has not been in a debate since his debates in the last election. so i think he's got -- he's not in fighting shape is my guess and all these practices he's doing, are to get him in the fighting shape. hopefully they have enough time to do it and hopefully he has a sparring opponent in john kerry who is not pulling any punches, not being as respectful to him as his staff might be and showing him that mitt romney is going to get on the stage knowing this is probably his last chance and he's going to be very aggressive in taking on obama. >> steve, thank you very much for your time. >> good to be here. >> steve, what do you think about this idea that debates don't usually change the race entirely all by themselves, but they confirm the narrative that has already been going on in the country? >> well, they can confirm the narrative but we keep coming

we've had businessman romney. foreign policy romney. latino romney. but we still haven't seen aqua romney. >> well, maybe that's not a bad idea. it is looking increasingly like mitt romney needs to do something to catch president obama in key toss-up states including ohio where both candidates are campaigning today. in the latest "the new york times"/quinnipiac poll has the president up ten points in the buckeye state. "the washington post" poll had him up by eight. the president pulled ahead in florida and pennsylvania, as well. drastic times call for drastic measures. the romney campaign is out with a new ad and just romney and the came camera. >> president obama and i both care about poor and middle class families. the difference is my policies will make things better for them. >> but that is a tough sell with middle class voters who believe romney's economic policies only benefit the rich. is it time for romney 4.0? so, i dug in to this quinnipiac poll and a few things that were interesting and struck me. first of all, there's so many people have

would be better if he was miguel romney or mitt rodriguez. he means latino voters may sway this election and i'm getting crushed by 40 points among them and if only i were one of them, they'd vote for me and we could start measuring the drapes in the oval office. not so fast. if the flap of a butterfly's wings in brazil can set off a tornado in texas, surely ranging mitt into miguel would have myriad implications. we have to do the whole back to the future historical mine trip on this one. imagine, please, mitt rodriguez gop presidential candidate. he's not quite a magnet for latino votes. they're not a monolith and he feels arizona's papers please law is a model for the nation and promises to veto the dream act and talks about self-deportation. rodriguez is not much more popular with latino voters than romney was. rodriguez also had some trouble with some white voters. some political scientists say race cost obama three to five points in '08. rodriguez is fighting the same problem and a birther smear campaign for people who don't believe's o
